Top Cubbies as of 4/29/2016

I can't take this anymore. Since tomorrow
is May already let's take a look at the
Cubs' status as of yesterday.

BAT|PITCH|Rs|Ra|W|L|UR|LR|TeamID
38.4 37.6 136 57 17 5 1.8 1.2 CHN

They lead the league in PITCH and only
the Cardinals have a higher BAT. They
completely dominate the league in BAT+PITCH.

Since it's so early in the season
let's just look at Cubbies in top 100.
Rank includes both AL and NL, batters
and pitchers.

Rank|WAA|Name_teamid|position
------------------------------
+001+ 2.62 Jake_Arrieta_CHN PITCH
+007+ 1.97 Anthony_Rizzo_CHN 1B
+010+ 1.89 Jason_Hammel_CHN PITCH
+011+ 1.83 Jon_Lester_CHN PITCH
+024+ 1.43 Dexter_Fowler_CHN CF
+033+ 1.26 Kris_Bryant_CHN 3B
+044+ 1.11 Matt_Szczur_CHN LF
+098+ 0.78 Adam_Warren_CHN PITCH

The Cubs have 3, almost 4 players in the
top 10 which is unheard of. Rizzo
is batting only 0.218 yet he's ranked
#7. How is that? Szczur only has
30 plate appearances, about 1/3 of a
regular player. How is he ranked 44?

The Cubs seem to be getting what few
hits they make when it matters, when
there are runners in scoring position.
If I could do a RISP calculation I suspect
either Szczur or Rizzo are #1 in the league.

Blast from the Past

I don't mean to delve into jinx territory
but ... according to my model, the last
time the Cubs had two people in the
top ten at any time in the season was
1992 early September. Here's a snapshot
on 9/6/1992

+001+ 8.34 Greg_Maddux_CHN PITCH
+007+ 6.49 Mike_Morgan_CHN PITCH

In the year of Billy Williams they
ended the year with these guys.

+001+ 11.57 Billy_Williams_CHN LF-RF
+006+ 8.74 Jim_Hickman_CHN 1B-CF-RF
+026+ 5.67 Ron_Santo_CHN 3B

They didn't have two in 2008 (I checked dailies)
nor 2003 where Prior finished #7.
In 1998 and 2001 Sosa reached #1 but no
other Cub came close.

1984 no. 1977 they came close
with these guys on 6/27/1977:

+003+ 5.29 Bruce_Sutter_CHN PITCH
+013+ 4.24 Rick_Reuschel_CHN PITCH

1969 no. 1958 and 1959 when Banks
finished #1 and #2, no other Cub close.

I can't do dailies to find out if any
of these guys in 1945 dallied in the top
ten during the season.

+006+ 7.43 Phil_Cavarretta_CHN 1B-OF-LF
+016+ 6.07 Claude_Passeau_CHN PITCH
+017+ 5.96 Hank_Wyse_CHN PITCH
+021+ 5.19 Andy_Pafko_CHN CF-OF
+025+ 4.66 Ray_Prim_CHN PITCH
+030+ 4.20 Peanuts_Lowrey_CHN OF-LF-CF

and we'll skip to the 1908 team.

+010+ 6.07 Mordecai_Brown_CHN PITCH
+018+ 3.84 Johnny_Evers_CHN 2B
+021+ 3.78 Frank_Chance_CHN 1B
+022+ 3.70 Joe_Tinker_CHN SS
+024+ 3.61 Johnny_Kling_CHN CR

Pretty sure all those above 5 spent
time in the top ten sometime during
their season.

And finally, this is end of April and
there's 7/8 of a season to play and
baseball is a marathon. Next week's
update I'll cover White Sox as well
since they're doing well too.
