State of the Cubs 5/10/2017

I did this 5 days ago but it got wiped out in a disk crash so we’ll compare to the last snapshot published.  Here are the Cubs status lines as of yesterday and almost two weeks ago.

BAT PITCH Rs Ra W L UR LR TeamID
17.8 6.6 109 89 12 9 -4.7 0.2 CHN 4/28/2017
17.1 1.1 166 155 17 16 -9.2 2.0 CHN 5/10/2017

PITCH is a little down and around exactly league average.  BAT is about the same and above league average and the Cubs went 5-7 since 4/28/2017.  The main cause of going WAA=5-7=-2 is slightly below average pitching and giving up unearned runs.  Their UR is one of the worst in MLB.  Last year they ended up with +9 near the top of the league.   MLB counts unearned runs equally with earned runs when determining who wins a ballgame.

Here are the Cubs in the top 200.

Rank WAA Name_TeamID Pos
+043+ 1.47 Mike_Montgomery_CHN PITCH
+055+ 1.30 Wade_Davis_CHN PITCH
+086+ 1.07 Carl_Edwards_CHN PITCH
+140+ 0.80 Kris_Bryant_CHN 3B
+147+ 0.76 Albert_Almora_CHN CF
+161+ 0.71 Javier_Baez_CHN 2B
+178+ 0.67 Addison_Russell_CHN SS
+186+ 0.63 Jon_Lester_CHN PITCH

They have 8 guys in top 200 which isn’t bad.  An average MLB team will field 6 or 7.  It’s still early in the season.   Bryant, Rizzo, and Schwarber should rise to the top eventually and when they do the Cubs will win a lot of games.

That is all for now.
