It has been a little over a week since Cubs Status was last done. Here are team statuses for then and now.
BAT up again, PITCH played average for the week and the Cubs went 5-1 gaining 4 games to make them +14. <anti jinx> If this is around 1/2 way through the season then they are on track to go +28 this year or win 95 games. That should be enough for a playoff spot. </anti jinx> Let’s look at top Cubs and how they compare to the rest of the league.
It’s tough staying in the top ten of MLB but Baez hanging in there. Lester dropped to #14 but he pitches today. WAR dropped Rizzo to 0.2 whatever that means down from 0.3. He slipped a few ranks in this model too but still considered in the top 100. Still amazes me that they will put WAR on Anthony Rizzo’s baseball card next year. Whatever. Let’s look at Tier Data.
CHN Tier Data
Lineups and Relief (RP) back to Tier 1 status. Boston has the best lineup now at WAA=16.25 and Arizona now has the best relief at WAA=9.58. After the Cubs took care of CIN relief, they dropped from #1 to #3 and now at WAA=8.90. Maybe the Cubs can chip away at that again this afternoon. Here is the (again) Tier 1 relief squad for the Cubs.
Not sure if our roster data is correct. Thought Duensing was on DL. And finally, here is the lineup CHN will field today against CIN.
Update 7/9/2018: There was a bug in the roster parser. Actually Wikipedia altered the page slightly which caused the parser to fail over to an old roster for all the other scripts that require roster data. The last valid roster was 6/29. This may affect some of the tier assignments mentioned here in previous posts. As of today CIN Relief dropped to Tier 2 after the Cubs hit them for a second day in a row. Cubs relief is actually better on paper without Duensing and considered solid Tier 1 again. The negative value for Duensing only reflects the past however. This will all be corrected the next Cubs Status during All Star Break. <end of update>
Used to do Blast From the Past showing past Cubs teams but not that interested in that this season. Cubs doing much better than last season this time. Oh what the heck….
Blast From the Past
BAT underwater and PITCH balancing them out to make them -1 in the win/loss columns for the season. Here are the top Cubs on this day last year.
Not many players in the top 200 MLB on this day last season which is why they were an average team then. Maddon picks Wade Davis as the only Cub on the All Star team. More detail can be found here. Cubs relief squad #1 in MLB. They were the reason for the high PITCH in team status and why all the pitchers in above list are relievers. Rizzo is having a slightly better year this season on this day than last year but it’s close.
That is all for now. New series with SFN starts tomorrow (Monday 7/9) and thus a matchup report will be forthcoming with handicapping. Lines have settled for the last two games of the CHN/CIN series. Until then ….
