Hideo Nomo

With all the hype surrounding Masahiro Tanaka Hideo Nomo’s name caught my ear when someone used him in a comparison.  I don’t recall Hideo Nomo making any of my lists here so far so I looked him up.  Since he started in 1995 my Japanese league data doesn’t go that far back.  Searches here for Japan prospects involved players in Japanese league no later than 1998.  As mentioned in the Japanese batters post, batters have had much more difficulties transferring from Japan to MLB than pitchers.  So I was intrigued to bring up his numbers and see his career trends.

The table below shows pertinent career numbers for Hideo Nomo according to this data model with his best two years highlighted blue.

Career WAA Value = 10.2

A very volatile year to year overall above average pitcher.  2004 and 2005 are as bad a pitcher can be.  Something happened to him between the years 2003 and 2004.

Rise and Fall of Daisuke Matsuzaka

Baseball was considering a proposal from Major League Baseball that would put a cap on bids for posted players at $20 million.

That would be considerably less than the $51.1 million winning bid the Red Sox submitted for Daisuke Matsuzaka before the 2007 season.

Via Cubs taking aim at Japanese star Tanaka

After reading this $51.1M figure that came from the Boston Red Sox it made me wonder.  What does Daisuke Matsuzaka career look like?  He didn’t make it to the previous post on Japanese pitchers, most likely because of his lack of success.  Below are his career numbers.  You be the judge whether or not he was worth the risk.

We did an analysis on Masahiro Tanaka and Japanese pitchers transferring into MLB.  We also covered how few Japanese batters make it in the MLB here.  Since Tanaka has been covered here I’ll paste Balentien’s career numbers since he just won MVP honors.

He didn’t do so well in MLB in 2008 and 2009. Perhaps another MLB team will roll the dice on him next season. An 11.4 WAA means he dominated his league in 2013.

Let’s take a look at the top ten players in both Japan Central and Japan Pacific Leagues according to this data model for 2013.

Japanese Batters

This is a list of Japanese batters who tried to transfer to the MLB seen through the lens of this data model. To compile this list I went through the list provided by Wikipedia on this page.  Kosuke Fukudome is left off since he has his own post here as well as Hideki Matsui and Ichiro Suzuki, the latter two might be considered the only Japanese batters to have sustained success at the MLB level.   Through these tables you can follow their careers through the Japan system and catch a glimpse as to what MLB might have seen in these players as potential prospects.

As we have seen with recent minor league successful call ups, it appears batters have a harder time making it in MLB than pitchers.  Not sure if this is a recent phenomenon and don’t have enough historical data to determine this.  Obviously batters do make it into MLB so they have to come from somewhere.  The list of Japanese batters making the transfer is quite small compared to the list of Japanese pitchers.

Munenori Kawasaki

Not sure what scouts saw in Munenori where they thought he’d make a good MLB batter.  They might have been enamored with his batting average.  Batting average can’t tell the entire story.  He didn’t do so well with Seattle or Toronto.

Rise and Fall of Kosuke Fukudome

Kosuke Fukudome

Kosuke Fukudome came into the league in 2008 for the Chicago Cubs (CHN) and actually played for the All Star team that year. The Cubs must have liked his Japan Central League numbers and gambled on him being able to hit MLB pitching. He had a good first half 2008 to make him an all star but floundered towards the end of the season to post an average 0.1 WAA. MLB pitchers must have found his weakness because he kept getting worse every year thereafter. He went from posting a colossal 11.4 for jcl in 2006 to being washed out of MLB more or less in 2011.   You can really see his trend following the WAA figure from year to year.

Although the Cubs didn’t have this data model but probably had their own of some kind, they clearly hoped for perhaps 1/2 his 2006 season in the transfer which would have made him a very valuable player for their team.

Note: I don’t have data on jcl for seasons before 1999.
