2014 Event Files have arrived

From http://retrosheet.org/

What’s New

  • 12/14/2014: Game accounts, boxes, and play-by-play data files for 2014; many other updates and additions. See [Games/Regular Season]

The 2014 event files have arrived at retrosheet.org.  I need to process them to add game state information. After the files have been processed they go through a second set of scripts to generate run data and error data.  Run data is a set of records, one for every run, that marks batter who scored, batter who made RBI, pitcher credited for that run, type of play that caused that run, etc.  Error records identify the fielder credited with that error and how many runs resulted in that error along with other info.

Once all this data is generated the third set of scripts can count various things and not have to worry about figuring out game state or who hit in what run.  Calculations like RISP and GWRBI are two stats dependent on traversing game events.  Those stats will be coming soon as well as day by day graphs of player WAA for every player, every year since 1974, the earliest year game event data is considered complete.

Top Clutch Game Winning Hitters in Post Season History

Here is another example of a statistic that can only be derived from knowing event data.

Clutch Game Winning  is described in the previous post. I thought it would be interesting to run post season event data through this algorithm to see who were the best clutch game winning hitters with respect to giving his team the lead when it mattered in post season play. The events included in this set are for all post season play from 1903 to 2012. Modern era players have had more opportunities since there are so many more playoff games with divisional and now wild card playoff games.

This list differs from the RISP post season list previously posted which measures runs above average in runners in scoring position. A batter must put his team in the lead to earn one of these.  A clutch game winning stat increments once for each occurrence  whereas the RISP stat counts batted in runs and compares that to league averages.

Clutch Game Winning Hit Leaders

Baseball keeps track of a stat called game winning RBI.  A player will be awarded this stat if they hit the RBI that ends up winning the game. I find this stat arbitrary and am interested in all  instances when players knock in runs putting their team ahead.  I call these clutch game winning hit situations and count them.   A player will be awarded this stat every time he puts his team ahead by one or more runs.   He only gets one credit for each occurrence.  More than one of these can be awarded per game and at least one will be awarded each game.   Players on the losing end of a game can earn these too.

A stat like this can only be derived by traversing event data.  Below is a list of the top 30 players and how many times they put their teams ahead with a clutch RBI for the 2013 season.
